he added shredded dark Mexican chocolate.   It was spicy, sweet, dark and light, simple yet complex -- all in one beautiful combination like Mom’s best Sunday gravy glammed up for a night at the Oscars.   Cooking with Chef Brad Lloyd was one of the highlights of my Costa Rica experience. Thanks, Brad.

One of our favorite vendors here is a guy we call Fabio who sells horse back rides on the beach.  He’s a frequent target for snide comments among the men in our social set.  All day long he leads young starry eyed tourists while his luxurious hair caresses his own bare muscles and puts his beautifully groomed horse’s mane to shame.  Today as Gary and I hoofed it to the car repair shop once again, I knew in my heart that even Gary would have mounted Fabio’s steed if it could have gotten us to the shop any faster.  It was a long, hot walk.

After a refreshing night's sleep, we were on our way. Check with me first if you're planning a stay at the Hotel Guanacaste in Liberia. You may want to bring a hot water heater, some plumbing supplies, a few towels and other odds and ends.
We stopped at the farmacia to buy Advil. The lady retrieved the bottle and asked us how many pills we wanted, then counted out 20 and wrapped them for us in a little piece of butcher paper.
we discovered that our keys were still in Nicaragua. Our bus left us at the Hotel Guanacaste at about 4 p.m. where our car was parked, and we were ready to go home. As the grim reality of our predicament descended upon us, we started evaluating options. Many different services promised to make us a key, one guy arriving on foot with a few wires and a hammer. Well after nightfall we finally checked into the "hotel" for the night and started again in the morning. Eventually we were directed to a locksmith "500 m east and 200 m north of here," which is the Costa Rican method for describing an address. On the upside, the situation offered an excellent opportunity to practice our Spanish as none of the service purveyors spoke English.
